The Patrick Henry Boys Water Polo team is off to a strong 3-2 start to the 2026 season. The Patriots opened on the road against perennial Open Division power Valhalla, keeping the game close through three quarters before ultimately falling 22–13. Junior JD Lackey led the Patriot attack with six goals, junior Sam Sanders dished out six assists, and sophomore goalkeeper Auggie Perez turned away 10 shots.

The following day, Patrick Henry bounced back with a strong showing at the Aquafest Tournament, picking up victories over Division I San Diego Dieguito Academy, Division II Classical Academy, and Division I Oceanside, with their only tournament loss coming against Division I Westview.

Through the first five games, juniors JD Lackey and Noah Jenkins lead the Patriots in scoring with 26 and 16 goals, respectively. Sam Sanders has been the team’s top distributor with 16 assists, while Auggie Perez has anchored the defense with 44 saves and nearly a 60% save percentage. With a 3-2 record and several impressive early season performances, the Patriots have plenty to build on as they head into the heart of their schedule.

This week their only game is Friday vs the 4^th ranked team in the County, Santana. Home opener is 9/17/26 @ Allied Gardens vs La Jolla County Day.

Patrick Henry HS: Is on the eastern edge of San Diego city in an incredible neighborhood with a vibrant and diverse student population. 2026-2027 student enrollment will exceed 2,600 students. Recent construction projects on campus have elevated academic programs in theatre, music, video production, engineering, math, and world language. Job Description:

The Head Coach will work under the supervision of the Athletic Director and the Associate Principal of Athletics. The Head Coach is expected to fill additional coach positions within the program (Assistants and JV), organize game and practice schedules, attend meetings, communicate with parents, promote program in community, and be a positive role model to every athlete within the program.

It is preferable for the Head Coach to have recent experience running a high school program and have a minimum of high school playing experience. The following is a list of qualities we are looking for in our new Head Coach:

• Clear articulation of a transformational coaching model. Understanding of coaching “why” and seeing coaching profession as educator, mentor, and leader of young people.
• Effective communication skills are a requirement. Direct communication with Athletic Director, athletes, parents, other Patriot Athletics coaches, and community to promote and build a successful program.
• Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for high school athletes.
• Ability to motivate student athletes to participate and sustain their interests in the program.
• Demonstrate proper sportsmanship and respect for players, officials, opponents, fans, and other coaches.
• Demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to and keep abreast of NFHS, CIF and League rules.
• Assume responsibility for inventory, selection, and care of equipment.
• Assume responsibility for proper care of the school facilities.
• Report injuries to administration and training staff in a timely manner.
• Adhere to Varsity Head Coach job functions as listed in the Coaches Handbook as well as general policies of the school.
• Availability to coach during summers and vacation periods.
• CPR, Concussion and First Aid Certified (or be willing to get certified upon hire)
• Other Job Duties: Assist the Athletic Director in developing game schedules, practice schedules, facilities use, transportation needs, and the program budget.

Patriot Families and Fans,

We are excited to be hosting our first home football game this Friday night.

Patrick Henry High School is very proud of our tradition of Friday night lights in our amazing community. We are happy to provide this fun, exciting community event for our families and fans. In order to ensure everyone can enjoy the game, performances, and amenities.

If you or your student attend our games, please take a moment to read and discuss our rules and the expectation for positive fan conduct:

1.    Use or possession of alcohol, cigarettes, vaping devices, or controlled substances is not allowed anywhere on our school grounds, including parking lots. This applies to everyone in attendance.

2.    Persons under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be permitted into the event.  This applies to everyone in attendance.

3.    No outside food or drink will be allowed into the stadium.

4.    There is no re-entry allowed. Once someone leaves the stadium, they may not return.

5.    All students must bring a school-issued ID to be admitted to the game.

6.    All middle school students and younger must be accompanied by and sit with a parent or an adult who is responsible for them (limit 4 students per adult).  Middle school and younger students will not be permitted entry to the game without an adult.

7.    Anyone who engages in activity that disrupts the event or the enjoyment of the event for others will be directed to leave the stadium and may be subject to disciplinary action.

8.  Only clear bags, small purses, medical bags and diaper bags will be permitted into the stadium, and all bags are subject to search by security personnel.

9.  Fans must remain in the stands and are not permitted on the field of play, to interact with referees, coaches, athletes, or visiting fans, or to cross over to the other side. All fans must stay on their designated side. Any fan who disregards these rules is subject to ejection and possible suspension from future games.

The CIF Championship is the first for the baseball program since 1980. It is the first Open Division Championship in Patriot Athletics history. It is the first Baseball Open Division Championship in SDUSD history.

In a game worthy of the finest chess matches, Patrick Henry High School coach Sheldon Watkins and Ramon Orozco of Eastlake traded moves for seven innings — bunting, stealing and walking hitters intentionally.

In the end, the best-laid plans blew up.

Henry scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, then saw an Eastlake baserunning error lead to the final out as the Patriots clawed back and beat the Titans 7-6 late Saturday night in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship before a standing-room-only crowd of more than 2,100 at USD’s Fowler Park.

Trailing 6-3 in the top of the seventh, Henry scored four times on three hits and three walks with Alex Mestman and Lukas Oquendo getting clutch, two-out RBI hits to tie the game.

Jimmy Gunn had an infield single to load the bases before Ian Brooke drew a four-pitch walk to push across the go-ahead run.

“I was trying to see a pitch that was down because they weren’t throwing too many strikes,” Brooke said. “He couldn’t execute, and I won the AB.”

But Henry had to survive the bottom of the seventh.

Caleb Foss singled and Ethan Dang sacrificed and was safe on an error.

Ethan Orozco sacrificed the runners to second and third and it appeared Zowen Watson appeared to tie the game with a liner to left field. But the ball was caught and the runner on second strayed off the bag and was doubled off to end it.

“I’ve been playing with these guys most of my life, and it’s a brotherhood,” Brooke said. “Even when times are low, we come together and never give up. We’ve got great coaching and a great student section supporting us. And now we’re going to state.”

Both teams in the Open Division championship game, in addition to semifinalists Cathedral Catholic and Point Loma, advance to the Southern California Regionals.

Henry figures to get a home game.

Henry broke on top in the first inning when Oquendo walked and scored on Brooke’s single.

Eastlake got even in the second when JP Conero singled and scored on Orozco’s single.

Henry took the lead back in the fourth when Wyatt Lo doubled with one out and scored on Sal Gagliano’s double. Gagliano scored on Mestman’s infield single, with Mestman later thrown out trying to score.

The Patriots (24-9) had a chance to add on, but left the bases loaded in the fifth. They also left two on in the sixth and the bases loaded in the seventh, stranding 11 runners in all.

Eastlake (24-7) left eight runners on base.

This was Eastlake’s sixth appearance in the Open Division title game in 12 years, winning it all in 2017, 2019 and 2021. Henry lost 3-0 to Granite Hills in the Open Division championship game last season.

To win a championship, upset the No. 1 team in the county, someone unexpected has to step up.

Wednesday, that someone was right-hander Lukas Waite.

Patrick Henry High School baseball coach Sheldon Watkins turned to Waite in the third inning of a winner-goes-to-the-title game contest.

And the junior, who had thrown just 11 1/3 innings all season, pitched the final five innings, allowing one run and striking out seven as the fifth-seeded Patriots beat No. 1-seeded Cathedral Catholic 5-2 to advance to Saturday’s 6 p.m. Open Division championship game against No. 3-seeded Eastlake.

Sal Gagliano, Henry’s third baseman, started on the mound Wednesday.

He went the first two innings when Watkins turned to Waite.

“It was going to be a bullpen day, a piece-it-together game and hope for the best,” Watkins said.

“Lukas had been hurt in the early part of the season. But he threw 57 pitches Saturday (in an elimination-game win over Rancho Bernardo) and he threw 80 today. We kept checking with him to see if he was OK, and he wanted to keep going.

“He was a stud.”

Waite admitted he was tired after throwing three innings.

“But we had a little bit of a long inning hitting, and I was able to get a breather,” Waite said. “It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment decision, but I told the coaches I could keep going.”

He had a relatively easy sixth inning, striking out two after a leadoff single.

But Cathedral Catholic (26-6) got singles by Joshua Priest and Hunter Harrington, bringing the tying run to the plate.

Waite froze the hitter with a full-count slider, setting off a dogpile celebration.

“We wanted to give ourselves a chance, get the tying run to the plate, and we did that,” said Cathedral Catholic coach Gary Remiker.

With expected starting pitcher Cody Reynolds out with strep throat, Remiker, like Watkins, had to piece together his pitching.

Shoei Darvish, the team’s No. 1 starter, has been out three weeks with an injury.

He volunteered to start and looked sharp until Jimmy Gunn tagged him for a two-run homer in the fourth.

“For Shoei to do that for his team means everything,” Remiker said.

Cathedral still advances to the Southern California Regionals, meaning the Dons’ season isn’t over.

Henry advances to the Open Division title game for the season year in a row after losing to Granite Hills 3-0 last season.

“Cathedral Catholic beat us 13-3 just a few days ago,” Watkins said. “So we’re in the Loser’s Bracket and have to beat a really good Rancho Bernardo team, then come to Cathedral and beat a really, really good team twice to get to the championship game.

“The kids got it done. And I couldn’t be prouder.”

The Patriots and Dons are Western League co-champions. Wednesday was the fifth time the teams have played this season, with Henry traveling to Cathedral Catholic four times and finally winning the season series 3-2.

“Honestly, beating a really good team like Cathedral and getting back to the championship game means everything,” Gunn said. “Eastlake is really good,  but we have some unfinished business from last season.”
