Patrick Henry Boys Volleyball Shows Growth and Resilience in 2026 Season
The Patrick Henry High School boys volleyball team turned the 2026 season into a story of resilience, growth, and momentum. Finishing the regular season with a 19–17 overall record and placing second in league, the Patriots overcame early-season challenges to once again position themselves among the top teams in CIF Division II.
After starting the season 9–14 while navigating multiple injuries, Patrick Henry found its rhythm down the stretch, winning 10 of its final 13 matches. The strong finish mirrored last season’s late surge and secured another home playoff opportunity, this time as the No. 6 seed in Division II—an improvement from the No. 7 seed the year prior.
Under the leadership of head coach David Chau in his second year, the Patriots continued to grow within a well-established system. With nearly the entire roster returning and the addition of three impactful freshmen, the team developed both depth and cohesion over the course of the season.
Senior captain Sylas Doan was central to the Patriots’ success, taking on an expanded role as both setter and opposite hitter. He led the team in assists (758), aces (63), and blocks (54), while also ranking second in kills (238) and digs (220). Reflecting on the season, Doan said, “The 2026 season was definitely one of my favorite seasons. We had a slow start to the season, but we locked in, and now we are finishing strong and hoping to go far in playoffs.”

Fellow captain and senior outside hitter Jack Boyd transitioned back to the outside after playing libero last season and emerged as a primary offensive leader. Boyd led the team with 258 kills, while also contributing 187 digs and 517 serve receptions. “The team had a rough start to the year, but we stayed committed, putting in the work at every practice and trusting in each other and our coaches,” Boyd said. “Day by day, we continued to improve, and now that effort has paid off. I’m really proud of the connection and resilience our team has built.”
Senior middle blocker Finnley Corbin overcame a month-long injury absence to make a strong impact upon his return, leading the team with a .406 hitting percentage and adding 154 kills (2.7 per set). Senior Connor Carr, who settled into the opposite position as the season progressed, contributed 225 kills and 51 blocks, ranking among the team’s top performers.
Freshman libero Koen Chu made an immediate impact, leading the team with 281 digs (2.8 digs per set) and 621 serve receptions, providing a steady presence in the back row. Fellow freshman Tri Nguyen stepped into a key role as a setter in a 6–2 system alongside senior Sylas Doan, finishing second on the team with 372 assists. Middle blocker Isaac Egan also emerged as a contributor, earning a starting role during an injury to senior Finnley Corbin and finishing second on the team in hitting percentage at .233.
The Patriots have relied on a more balanced offensive approach this season. This year, three seniors have surpassed 220 kills, highlighting the team’s depth and versatility. With greater familiarity in Coach Chau’s system, the offense became more evenly distributed, making Patrick Henry a difficult team to defend.
Despite not having a full roster after the opening match of the season due to ongoing injuries, the Patriots demonstrated consistent determination and growth. Their ability to adapt and improve throughout the year became a defining characteristic of the team.
Coach Chau reflected on the team’s journey, saying, “We knew we had a lot of potential coming into this season, but also knew we had to work even harder than last year. With a slow start to the season, it has been so much fun watching these boys come together and play for one another to turn the season around. We are playing at a high level at the right time and are entering the playoffs with a new mindset and determination.”
The 2026 season highlighted a program trending in the right direction. With a winning league record, competitive tournament performances, and a strong mix of veteran leadership and young talent, Patrick Henry continues to build a solid foundation.

The experience gained by underclassmen, combined with the leadership shown by seniors, suggests the Patriots are positioning themselves to take the next step—potentially contending for higher playoff seeding and deeper postseason runs in the coming years. More than just wins and losses, the 2026 season will be remembered as a year of progress, resilience, and promise for the Patrick Henry boys volleyball program.
